Stagione 2014-15: si riparte dalla cocente delusione di non aver ottenuto una scelta tra le prime 3 al Draft 2015, si riparte dalla brutta stagione giocata dalla franchigia della Grande Mela che, nonostante possa vantare due grandi nomi come Derek Fisher e Phil Jackson tra lo staff tecnico, non riesce ad emergere in una modesta Eastern Conference da qualche stagione a questa parte.
L’estate dei Knicks è stata improntata sulla ricerca di un certo equilibrio a roster, sebbene la franchigia sia ancora in piena ricostruzione. Gli arrivi di Aaron Afflalo, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Robin Lopez, Kyle O’ Quinn, Kevin Seraphin e Derrick Williams, che sono coincisi con molte altre partenze, hanno sicuramente portato un certo entusiasmo, così come le firme dal Draft di Kristaps Porzingis, ala lettone dal talento cristallino, e Jerian Grant.
Le ultime novità in casa Knicks però parlano di nuove firme, altri giovani da aggiungere ad un roster altrettanto giovane ma sulla carta ben più competitivo dello scorso anno: si tratta di Travis Trice, Darion Atkins e Wesley Saunders. Vediamo ora i contratti nel dettaglio:
- Travis Trice: La guardia ex Michigan State, che con gli Spartans durante l’ultima stagione ha disputato le final four, è stato ingaggiato con un contratto parzialmente garantito di un solo anno. Probabilmente verrà spedito nella squadra affiliata ai Knicks in D-League.
- Darion Atkins e Wesley Saunders: Secondo fonti multiple, tra le quali RealGM e Ian Begley di ESPN.com, gli esterni sarebbero stati messi sotto contratto solo per la durata del training-camp, al termine del quale il loro contratto dovrebbe scadere.
I contratti sono tutti parzialmente garantiti, e con un paio di posti liberi a roster proprio questi ragazzi potrebbero darsi battaglia per avere una chance di giocare la regular season durante la prossima stagione con i Knicks, anche se le possibilità di vedere questi ragazzi in campo durante la regular season 2015-16 sono ancora molto poche, come scrive Shams Charania di RealGM.com.
Le firme di molti esterni in particolare nello spot di Small Forward portano ad ipotizzare una trade che comprenda Carmelo Anthony, unica stella nel roster dei ragazzi di coach Fisher che però ha l’onore e l’onere di occupare una massiccia fetta del salary cap della franchigia della Grande Mela.
La situazione per Phil Jackson comincia a farsi interessante, le vie da poter percorrere sono molteplici e non è da escludere che finalmente i Knicks possano tornare a brillare in una Eastern Conference che sta diventando sempre più modesta. In tutto ciò un ruolo fondamentale verrà giocato dall’abilità del personale dirigenziale che dovrà sapersi muovere con i tempi giusti sul mercato e dovrà saper scegliere per il bene della franchigia, anche se questo dovesse significare privarsi di ‘Melo.
