NBA-Canada, un gruppo di investitori canadese svela i piani per portare una franchigia NBA a Montreal, in Québec.
A latere della sfida di pre-season di mercoledì tra Toronto Raptors e Brooklyn Nets, l’ex ministro per il commercio e senatore canadese Michael Fortier ha illustrato alla stampa l’intenzione di proporre Montreal quale nuova sede per la 31esima squadra NBA, qualora la lega dovesse valutare l’espansione.

La NBA non ha al momento piani per per una 31esima squadra.
Il Commissioner Adam Silver ha però dichiarato in estate che un eventuale team d’espansione avrebbe probabilmente sede al di fuori dei confini nazionali USA, indicando ovviamente Canada e Messico quali paesi ospitanti.
Così Michael Fortier alla stampa sul progetto NBA-Canada:
“Anche se – come noto – la NBA fatto sapere di non avere piani immediati per l’espansione, il nostro gruppo ha preso la decisione di preparare il terreno per una eventuale progetto di allargamento a 31 squadre. Cosa che confidiamo possa avvenire in un futuro prossimo”

Il portavoce del fondo d’investimenti ha poi dichiarato che il progetto mira ad essere finanziato esclusivamente da soggetti privati. Il gruppo punta ad attrarre altri investitori nei prossimi mesi.
Stephan Crétier, CEO del gruppo GardaWorld – che ha sede a Montreal – avrebbe aderito al progetto, garantendo una quota del 10% del valore stimato della nuova franchigia.
Il costo stimato dell’operazione si aggirerebbe attorno agli 1.5 e 2 miliardi di dollari, nuova arena compresa, secondo quanto riportato da Fortier.
NBA-Canada, il nuovo modello delle arene di proprietà
La costruzione di arene di proprietà per le squadre NBA rappresenta il futuro per i progetti d’espansione della lega, in alternativa al presente modello di “noleggio” delle strutture.
A partire dalla stagione NBA 2019\20, i Golden State Warriors si trasferiranno al nuovo Chase Center di San Francisco, dalla parte opposta della baia che separa Oakland e la città gemella.
Il Chase Center sarà di proprietà esclusiva dei Golden State Warriors, titolari di un investimento di circa un miliardo di dollari.
Le stime dei ricavi su vendita di biglietti GOlden Satteer eventi NBA ed extra-cestistici, contratti di sponsorizzazione diretta e su attività commerciali legate al nuovo complesso si aggirano attorno ai 500 milioni di dollari annui.
