4 le partite WNBA giocate nella notte, con i risultati tra New York Liberty e La Sparks, e tra Connecticut Sun e Phoenix Mercury importanti per la corsa agli ultimi 3 posti ai playoffs rimasti.
Le prime 5 squadre sono infatti ormai già decise: Sky, Aces, Sun, Storm e Mystics hanno già staccato il loro biglietto per la post-season e resta da definire solo il posto in classifica finale e la testa di serie. Alle loro spalle, solo le modeste Indiana Fever sono già eliminate da tempo, mentre ci sono ancora 6 squadre in 2.5 partite.
Risultati WNBA, le Liberty travolgono le Sparks
In una delle partite della notte WNBA più importanti, Sabrina Ionescu e le Liberty hanno travolto per 102-73 delle LA Sparks in crisi e che dopo 10 minuti di gioco perdono anche Chiney Ogwumike per infortunio. Ionescu segna 31 punti con 6 rimbalzi e 4 assist, e 5 su 9 al tiro da tre punti in appena 24 minuti, Natasha Howard chiude con una doppia doppia da 24 punti e 11 rimbalzi sbagliando un solo tiro dal campo (9 su 10) in 23 minuti.
Con lo stop per infortunio di Rebecca Allen (scontro con Ogwumike e partita finita anche per lei), spazio a Han Xu dalla panchina, la giocatrice cinese segna 13 punti con 7 rimbalzi e 8 assist, mentre Marina Johannes ne segna 12. Con la vittoria le Liberty inaugurano nel migliore dei modi il nuovo parquet griffato Xbox al Barclays Center e soprattutto salgono all’ottavo posto in classifica che vale – per il momento – i playoffs.
Mercury sempre più giù, altra tripla doppia per Alyssa Thomas
Davanti alle Liberty ci sono oggi le Phoenix Mercury, altra grande in crisi. Contro le Connecticut Sun in trasferta sarebbe stata dura, e così si è rivelato Diana Taurasi e compagne che hanno perso per 87-63 andando sotto vistosamente già nel secondo quarto.
Taurasi gioca soli 11 minuti, Skylar Diggins-Smith non segna mai da tre (0 su 5) mentre per le Sun Alyssa Thomas sigla la seconda tripla doppia consecutiva con 10 punti, 12 rimbalzi e 10 assist. L’MVP 2021 Jonquel Jones segna 10 punti con 10 rimbalzi. Le Mercury perdono 18 palloni complessivi e ora rischiano davvero di restare fuori dalla post-season, senza uno scatto d’orgoglio nelle ultime partite.
Alyssa Thomas delle Sun è nel frattempo diventata appena la quinta giocatrice della storia WNBA a realizzare più di una tripla doppia in carriera, assieme a Candace Parker e Sabrina Ionescu in questa stagione.
Risultati WNBA: le Mystics fermano le Aces
Alla Entertainment & Sports Arena di Washington DC, vittoria di prestigio per le Mystics in ascesa, che nonostante una Elena Delle Donne da appena 5 punti, battono per 83-73 le Las Vegas Aces. EDD chiude comunque con 11 rimbalzi e 5 assist, ai canestri ci pensano Shakira Austin e soprattutto Natasha Cloud con 16 punti e 9 assist, e la guardia ex Texas Ariel Atkins.
Washington ferma la marcia delle Aces, che avevano vinto 4 delle ultime 5 partite giocate, concedendo a Kesley Plum e compagne soli 14 punti nel quarto periodo. A’Ja Wilson segna 22 punti con 12 rimbalzi, Chelsea Gray ne aggiunge 20 e Plum chiude con 5 su 16 al tiro. Dalla panchina, il punto debole delle Aces, arrivano appena 5 punti e Dearica Hamby non segna neppure un canestro in 22 minuti.
WNBA, Dallas batte Chicago protegge il sesto posto
Le Dallas Wings trovano a Chicago contro le Sky una vittoria importante per proteggere il loro sesto posto: 84-78 trascinate da Marina Mabrey e Teaira McCowan, mentre a Chicago non basta il rientro light di Candace Parker (22 minuti per lei) né la doppia doppia di Kahleah Copper da 19 punti e 11 rimbalzi.
A metà quarto periodo Dallas è avanti per 74-60 prima della rimonta firmata Copper e Allie Quigley che riporta le Sky sul -3 (78-75). A chiudere il discorso è Veronica Burton con i due tiri liberi della sicurezza. Una vittoria che vale oro per le Wings prive della loro miglior giocatrice, Arike Ogunbowale, out per un problema alla caviglia, per Mabrey 26 punti, doppia doppia da 20 punti e 12 rimbalzi per McCowan.
Sky (23-8) e Aces (23-9) sono separate ora da una sola partita per il primo posto in classifica e la testa di serie numero 1 ai playoffs.
