6 stagioni ai Minnesota Timberwolves a 19.7 punti di media con 16.5 tiri tentati a gara. Quando a febbraio del 2020 Andrew Wiggins venne ceduto a Golden State in cambio di D’Angelo Russell, Wiggins sembrava (ed era, ndr) l’ennesimo giocatore in cerca di un nuovo ambiente che potesse dare nuova linfa vitale alla sua carriera, ma nessuno credeva veramente in una rinascita.
Ad oggi, dopo quel che abbiamo visto in 5 gare di finale NBA, quella trade è una delle migliori degli ultimi anni per gli Warriors. Non solo l’efficienza offensiva, 16.5 punti di media con il 43.3% dal campo ed il 31.8% da tre, anche, se non soprattutto, la presenza difensiva. Wiggins si è trasformato in un “two-way player” a tutti gli effetti, e queste finali ne sono la dimostrazione.
In gara 4, vinta da Golden State per 107-97, ha catturato ben 16 rimbalzi (di cui 3 in attacco) e chiuso con 17 punti. In gara 5, questa notte, ha fatto registrare un’altra doppia doppia da 26 punti e 13 rimbalzi, il tutto in 43 minuti di gioco e con 12/23 dal campo. Lo stesso Wiggins, poi, è stato decisivo nel quarto quarto con una serie di canestri in area che hanno sancito la vittoria dei padroni di casa.
Se Golden State dovesse vincere questo titolo, è molto probabile che l’MVP delle finali vada a Stephen Curry, che si discuta di come questo premio impatti la sua “legacy” e di come si posiziona nuovamente nella classifica dei più grandi di sempre. Tuttavia, sarebbe scorretto non riconoscere i giusti meriti ad Andrew Wiggins, il quale, in una partita da 16 punti e 7/22 dal campo di Curry, è stato per lunghi tratti il trascinatore degli Warriors.

“Quando abbiamo acquisito Andrew Wiggins via scambio, molti pensavano fosse solo uno dei tanti giocatori da poter scambiare in futuro, o inserire in un accordo di dimensioni maggiori. Per noi non è mai stato così, nemmeno all’inizio. Lo abbiamo sempre visto come un giocatore che può inserirsi alla perfezione nel nostro gruppo, e così è stato. Ha risposto presente ad ogni sfida, ogni ostacolo che si è posto sul suo percorso, ed è stato fondamentale per i nostri successi. Ora abbiamo ancora bisogno di lui per un’ultima vittoria”.
Le parole di Draymond Green evidenziano come Wiggins facesse parte dei piani di coach Steve Kerr sin dall’inizio. “Sapevamo che avremmo avuto bisogno del suo atletismo, della sua versatilità“, ha proseguito Kerr, “eppure non avevamo minimamente idea che potesse contribuire in questo modo. Questa è l’ennesima dimostrazione che l’ambiente è ciò che conta. I compagni, il posto giusto, sono in grado di cambiare totalmente un giocatore”.
“Mi sento onorato di far parte di una organizzazione cha ha un passato ed una cultura vincente“, ha dichiarato Andrew Wiggins a seguito della sua notevole prestazione di gara 5, vinta per 104-94. “Appena sono arrivato, mi hanno subito messo in condizione di avere successo, sono stati in grado di tirare fuori il meglio di me. Questa è la definizione di mentalità vincente”.
Infine, anche Curry ha voluto spendere qualche parola sull’ex Kansas Jayhawk: “Ha accolto a braccia aperte la sfida di essere costante e contribuire su entrambe le metà campo ogni sera. Lo abbiamo messo in una condizione di potersi divertire mentre gioca a pallacanestro al più alto livello possibile, e questo lo ha portato a fare quel che avete visto sul campo”.
