Giannis Antetokounmpo è ormai considerato come uno dei migliori giocatori di basket al mondo.
Per le Olimpiadi di Parigi 2024, è stato uno dei tre giocatori NBA a cui è stato affidato il ruolo di portabandiera, insieme a LeBron James per gli Stati Uniti e Dennis Schroder per la Germania.
Quando gli è stato chiesto di ricoprire questo ruolo, la sua risposta iniziale è stata sorprendente. Ha infatti suggerito che l’onore sarebbe dovuto spettare al suo capitano, Kostas Papanikolaou.
“Il giorno in cui mi hanno chiesto se fossi stato disposto a rappresentare il Paese e a fare da portabandiera, la mia prima risposta è stata che volevo lo facesse Kostas. Aveva più presenze in nazionale di me”.
E invece, c’è stata insistenza. Essere il primo atleta nero a portare la bandiera della Grecia alle Olimpiadi è stato un giusto riconoscimento per il suo contributo allo sport e al suo Paese. Quel prestigioso momento ha evidenziato la sua presenza e importanza sulla scena internazionale.
E la sua risposta la dice lunga sulla sua umiltà e sul suo rispetto per i compagni di squadra. Nonostante la fama e i numerosi riconoscimenti, Giannis è sempre rimasto con i piedi per terra ed è sempre stato attento ai sentimenti di chi lo circonda. La sua proposta evidenzia la mentalità di squadra.
“Quando hanno insistito ho detto che per me sarebbe stato fantastico, un vero onore per me. E quando l’ho fatto, è stato il più grande onore che abbia mai avuto in vita mia” ha sottolineato. “È qualcosa che potrebbe non ripetersi. Potrei vincere un altro anello NBA, potrei vincere un altro premio di MVP: chi lo sa? Ma potrei non portare mai più la bandiera. Quindi ho cercato di assorbire il più possibile di quei 45 minuti”.
Quel momento è stato incredibilmente speciale per Giannis, la cui storia ha commosso e commuove ancora.
Portando la bandiera ha rappresentato non solo una nazione, ma anche lo spirito sportivo e l’essenza di ciò che significa superare le avversità.
